The Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institut (The Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries) under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Consumer Protection provides scientific support to the development of nutritional and agricultural policy and promotes scientific knowledge in these fields for public benefit. The Federal Research Institute is scientifically independent. Organic farming and food research is organised by the Institute of Organic Agriculture (OEL).
Past research relevant to Legume Futures has been conducted within the German organic farming and food research programme (Bundesprogramm Oekologischer Landbau, BOEL). Led by Dr Herwart Böhm, this research has been focused on organic crop production, grain legumes, oilseed rape and potatoes. The research in Legume Futures is focused on soil fertility and plant nutrition. This is linked to German research on optimising the rotational benefits of in organically cultivated catch crops. Past relevant research includes mixed cropping of grain legumes projects, yield and weed suppression of different varieties of peas, feed quality of grain legumes and their contribution for improving the protein supply of farm animals, cultivation of blue lupins, integration of oilseed rape in organic crop rotations, and development of soil fertility, plant production and biodiversity after conversion of the experimental farm in Trenthorst/ Wulmenau to organic farming.
The role of the vTI in Legume Futures is the provision of site data and a case study in Work Package 1 and contributions to WP 2,3,4,5,6
Dr Herwart Böhm is leader of the working group “Plant Production” since 2002. His main research topic is the grain legume production in organic farming and the optimisation of mixed cropping systems with regard to yield stability, weed suppression, nutrient cycling, and feed quality. He has worked on potato production in organic farming and his research has included variety, fertilization and tillage studies with special emphasis on nutrient management, yield and quality. He participated in the EU-study contract ‘Survey on the Environmental Effects of Potato Production in the EU’.
