Legume Futures is working to deliver seven key outputs or results:
New cropping system designsthat optimise the contribution of legumes within European farming systems and that contribute positively to environmental, economic and social objectives. These will provide blueprints for developing new systems. These require data from field experiments, expert insight from partners, assessments of biological nitrogen fixation, assessments of fate of nitrogen from green manure, assessments effects on nematodes in protected cropping, quantitative analysis of historical datasets.
Case studies. Based on the Network, the case studies will deliver experimental data and agronomic information for cropping plans. This will deliver local and tested crop development strategies.
Enhanced access to information and technology. An audit and centralisation of information on biological resources realising a major step towards the foundation of a single ‘European Legume Crop Biological Resources Centre’. This will provide users with ‘joined-up’ access to collections and databases.
Environmental emissions and assessments. Quantification of emissions to the environment, resource use, effects on biodiversity and assessment of related impacts. This will provide users with validated reference data and models that predict the effect of legume use on emissions and impacts.
Socio-economic data and assessments. These are integrated assessments aimed at policy in particular. They include the delivery of assessed cropping and agricultural system scenarios that amongst other things inform the development of supply chains.
Biological and resource use assessments. These are also integrated assessments aimed at policy in particular. They include the integrated assessment of environmental and resource use impacts at a wide range of scales, with particular emphasis on prediction using models. This includes assessments of fossil energy use effects and impacts on nutrient balances.
Assessments of non-traditional use potential. Information to support the development of supply chains for non-traditional uses of legumes in Europe.
